Walk up from the Quayside, past Newcastle Keep, and around a side street to the rear of St. Nicholas Cathedral, and come face to face with a terrifying creature of unknown origin – The Vampire Rabbit!

In August 1650, forty years before the infamous Salem Witch Trials, Newcastle hosted one of the most shocking mass public executions of those accused of witchcraft.  And while the vast majority of those accused, imprisoned or executed for witchcraft were women, that April day also saw a lone male hung for the charge.

Arbor Low certainly has an ambience about it.  Set on a hill, ancient, panoramic views, windswept and weathered, secluded (the adjacent farm the only house for miles) – it is certainly an atmospheric location, especially when under moody skies.  So, if you’re in the Peak District, do pay it a visit

The Chained Oak still attracts many visitors each year.  And the carriageway which tracks past the Chained Oak (originally running from Alton Towers to St. Giles’s Church in Cheadle) still remains to this day – and has it’s own tales.
